Individual Banner Weighting

Individual Banner Weighting is designed to allow users to apply different weight-sets to different banners (aka: cross-breaks or column variables).  This can be helpful to ensure that specific groups are representative of their broader population.

NB: Individual Banner Weighting is intended to be a tool for advanced users of A&R. If you are not sure about when to use individual banner weighting, we recommend consulting a statistician or marketing scientist before you use it on your dataset.

Before Applying Individual Banner Weighting…

First, set-up the banners you want to use/weight individually as you normally would in Cross Table:

You also need to create any weight-sets you want to use via Actions > Weighting and using either the standard weighting wizard or the Advanced Weighting wizard to create your weight set(s).

Individual banner weighting can be used in the regular A&R mode where all tables use the same banner set or in the Flexible Banner mode where banners may be different across all tables. To switch on Flexible Banner mode, go to Options > Table Display > toggle on Flexible Banners.

How to Access and Apply Individual Banner Weighting

Go to Options > Filter and bases > then do one or more of the following:

To apply an overall/general weight to the majority of your banners and Individual Banner Weight (IBW) to one or more specific banners, select the general weight set you want to use in the “General weight set” box then toggle “on” “Apply General weight to all” then if you want the general weight set to apply to all tabs click the “Apply selected weights to all tabs” button then click the “Apply weight set to individual banners/columns” button:

Clicking the “Set weight options” button will open the Individual Banner Weighting interface:

  • The interface will list out all banner variables and all of the code options.
  • The “Select Weight Set” menu will provide a menu of all available weighting schemes.
  • The short abbreviation will in “Weight Abbreviation” will appear below the banner header. There will also be a list in the table of all applied weighting schemes and abbreviations.

NB:

If you do not want to apply a weight set to a banner, leave it blank.

If you want to have a banner that is unweighted, select this from the drop-down. The label for this banner will then be blank.

You do not need to list the overall weight set next to banners where you do not want to apply an individual banner weight. A&R will apply the general weight set if one is selected to all banners that are not assigned a different individual banner weight. In the above/below example, the general weight set is called “country” and we’ve assigned “Example” to 18-24-year-olds and “NewYear25” to 35-44-year-olds.

Each banner/cross break/column variable will appear once in IBW. If you have an edge case where you need to apply different weights to the same banner/cross break/column variable in different tables, please recreate this variable in categorical variables and name it something different and then apply it as the banner/cross break/column variable to the relevant table(s). For example, if “QAge” is weighted one way when it is the banner/cross break/column variable for Q1, but “QAge” needs to be weighted differently when it is the banner/cross break/column variable for Q35, then create a replica of “QAge” and name it differently e.g. “QAge_2” then apply “QAge_2” as the banner/cross break/column variable to Q35 and weight as required.

Once you have finished, click “Update” then click “Set options” in the main Options menu.

Your individual banner weights will now be applied. Example of the table display in Cross Table:
