Merge Rows and/or Columns in Tables

Merging categories into larger or more robust categories in your cross tables is an excellent way to frame the data insights that you wish to deliver.

.

1. Select the variables from the rows and columns that you want to change.

2. Then click Edit.

  • If you have selected more than one question, there will be a tab for each selected question
  • For a single or multiple question, the question will appear with the rows only
  • For a grid question, the question will appear in both the Response rows and the Response columns

2. Select the response-rows you want to merge

3. Click on Actions and select Merge rows.

A new category is created. The categories included in the merged categories are automatically disabled (un-checked).

.

What next?

  • You can override the new category text. Enter your changes directly in the text box. In the example above, this would be renamed "18-34"
  • The original categories are automatically unchecked, but you may re-check them if you want to display both the merged and original categories. You can also merge everything you need to and then use the toggle at the very top to toggle all codes back on.
  • Use the red trash can if you wish to delete the merged row/column.
  • You can move the codes around. For example, you may wish to put a net for agree and/or disagree at the bottom of your table.
  • Merge categories are a logical OR between all the selected categories. If you need any other logical combination, you will need to create a “Custom question” using the filter builder.
  • A numeric question (NUMERIC GRID) with several rows, may not be merged in this manner. Create a “Custom question” to merge rows in a NUMERIC GRID question.

If we merged all six age codes into three age codes, the new table would look like this:
