Lists Explained

Overview:

The list feature is useful for creating predefined lists that you will need to use repeatedly throughout your survey. For example, brand studies often use the same brand list as answer choices for multiple questions in a study. Setting these up once in “Lists” means that you can drop this in as your answer choices as many times as you need to.

Instructions for creating a list:

  1. At the bottom of the left-hand side of the “Build” page, there is an option that says “Lists”

2. By clicking on the “+” next to “Lists” you can add your own list to insert into your answer choice options.

3. Once you’ve given your list a name, click “Save”. The new list will then appear under “Lists” at the bottom-left of the Build page:

4. Click on the list you’ve just created (in this example “Demolist2”) and it will open the screen where you can add your answer choices and routing as required:

a. Name – enter each answer choice in an individual box

b. Code – change or keep the assigned answer choice code

c. Keep position – if ticked, it ensures that this code does not rotate

d. Exclusive – if ticked, this option will always be a unique choice. If it is part of a multiple list, Exclusive ensures that it can only be selected on its own with no other answer choices.

e. Other – if ticked, it will offer the respondent an open-ended text box to add something to your answer choice list.

f. Skip to – provides a drop down menu where the user can specify what that answer choice will skip to if selected.

g. Filter – opens the filter builder so that the user can specify a filter for that answer choice.

h. Custom attribute - add extra html attributes to your input

i. Filter (Questions) - inside a contaier you may have multiple questions, but you can only have one answer choice list per container, you may not want to show a certain answer choice for a partciular question in your container. This feature allows you to build a filter for it.

j. Fill in (Questions) - Automatically fills in an answer for certain rows (useful for hidden questions).

k. Sync rotationBy putting a “1” in the boxes, this ensures the same randomised rotation is applied each time this list is used.

l. Trash can – allows the user to delete the answer choice.

m. Add new row – will add another space for the next answer choice

n. Paste list - when clicked, this opens a box. Copy and paste a list into the box and click save instead of adding each choice one by one.

A finished example is below, when you’re finished creating or updating your list, click “Save”. In this example we have a list of the 16 teams that qualified for the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2023.

Adding a list to a question:

Once your list is set-up, you can add it into any question’s answers section, by clicking the “Add List” icon.

Your list(s) will appear as a menu and you select the list you need and Survey Builder will automatically add these as the question’s answer choices:
