Merge Rows and/or Columns in Charts

Merging categories into larger or more robust categories in your charts is an excellent way to frame the data insights that you wish to deliver.

1. Select the chart(s) you wish to work on. You can select variables in both the rows and columns so that you can edit both the cross breaks and row variables in your chart.

2. Click Edit.

  • If you have selected more than one question, there will be a tab for each selected question
  • For a single or multiple question, the question will appear with the Response Rows only
  • For grid questions, there will also be codes and options in the Response Columns

3. Select the response-rows you want to merge

4. Click on Actions and select Merge rows.

A new category is created.

The categories included in the merged categories are automatically disabled (un-checked).

  • You can override the new category text. Enter your changes directly in the text box. For example we may want to rename the below "Under 40 years" or "15-39 years"
  • The original categories are automatically unchecked, but you may re-check them if you want to display both the merged and original categories.
  • Use the red trash can if you wish to delete the merged row/column.
  • Merge categories are a logical OR between all the selected categories. If you need any other logical combination, you will need to create a “Custom question” using the filter builder.
  • numeric question (NUMERIC GRID) with several rows, may not be merged in this manner. Create a “Custom question” using the filter builder to merge rows in a NUMERIC GRID question.

5. Click Update to finish the merger and see your new chart.
