Importing Data - Manually Edit Multiple Choice & Grid Variables

Some data file formats such as SPSS (.sav) and Excel (.xls) cannot store multiple choice responses in the same variable/column. Instead, separate individual variables are created for each response.

When you import a data set to Walr Platform you are able to choose whether or not to automatically convert multiple choice and grid questions into their correct format.

The import process can automatically join the responses back into a multiple choice question.

Grid questions in all import formats are also automatically detected if they share the same categories.

Manually Edit Multiple Choice and Grid Questions

When you import a new dataset you can open the "Open import for manual processing" wizard. The Walr Platform will automatically search the data set to create new multiple choice and grid variables.

  1. Select the Advanced import drop down.
  2. Select Open import for manual processing as shown.
  3. You can decide to do a fully manual import or select the question type(s) (grid or multiple choice) that you wish to merge automatically. The system will find all the single answer questions it thinks can be converted. You can also load a previously saved template so that you do not have to make the import changes again for files where only the data has been updated/added to.
  4. Click Next to continue.

4. Select all of the single questions that you wish to merge together.

5. When you have the question fully selected click Create multi choice.

  • The Walr Platform will evaluate the data you have selected and offer to you the types of questions that make sense to create. Depending on your selection you may see Create multi choice, Create grid, or Create numeric list in the top left as appropriate.
  • A window opens that allows you to edit the merged question text. Click Save when the question is the way you like it.

6. Question and response text can be edited by double clicking on the text and making any changes such as fixing a typographic error.

  • You do not need to be merging questions in order to edit questions. Click on the question you wish to edit and make your changes.

7. When you have created all of the merged questions you wish to in your data, click Finalize to complete the import.

Edit Merged Questions

Merged questions are highlighted in green. Click the arrow on the left side to expand/collapse the question to show the single questions that were merged.

In the right side window, you can edit texts and select/deselect responses to include by clicking on the check boxes.

To remove a merged question and return to individual variables, simply select the variable and click Undo Grid/Multi question.
